Written by: Honoré de Balzac, Translated by Robert Cornthwaite

A conniving businessman who has been living extravagantly makes his way by flagrantly manipulating the stock market through rumor and trickery and simultaneously running the biggest Ponzi scheme of the 19th Century. Concurrently, he attempts to thwart the romantic plans of his daughter and her beloved by making arrangements for her marriage to a man he believes to be a fabulously wealthy Count. But the Count is a penniless man himself.
