PART ONE

 Once upon a time
  there were Twenty Lovesick Maidens...

...well, six. They tended to dramatize.

The poet Reginald Bunthorne

was the very cynosure of their

hearts and minds.

...but his weird fancy had alighted,

for the nonce,

on Patience, the village milkmaid.

This frightened her.

 The Queen’s Dragoon Guards:

...under the misapprehension that

the Rapturous Maidens were still

engaged to them.

 Archibald Grosvenor --

A broken-hearted troubadour

whose mind's aesthetic

and whose tastes are pure.

  He was Patience’s childhood sweetheart,
but when she learned that love must be
painfully selfless sacrifice,
she knew that so perfect a romance
couldn’t possibly qualify as love.

Bunthorne, pining for Patience,
decided to raffle himself off
to some lucky Rapturous Maiden...

… but Patience, pining for Grosvenor,
decided that duty demanded
she love the unlovable Bunthorne

… thereby freeing

the Rapturous Maidens

to return to their old, old loves,

the Heavy Dragoons…

… that is, until they noticed

the incredibly Poetic and Aesthetic

Archibald Grosvenor!
