A vision of New Place in the 21st Century!

Map to New Place

As it stands, the old Reliance Builder's Center at Vineland and Huston in the NoHo Arts District holds a few offices, a dusty parking lot, and a roughly finished warehouse. Already the Antaeus Company maintains its offices, an extensive classical theatre research library, and rehearsal spaces here. By the beginning of the century, Antaeus hopes to begin a regular season of public performances as a resident of New Place, a 99-seat studio theatre.

This model of the proposed plan was created by New Place designer Linda Johnston

The rear wall of New Place will have a permanent grid to which various modular sets can be attached. Michael R. Cook has created this design for the initial New Place modular set, an Elizabethan stagehouse based on the latest research available through London's new Globe Theatre. The working doors and practical upper level will allow great flexibility and creativity in staging Shakespeare and other classical plays.

Dakin Matthews give a few Antaeans an early tour of the warehouse section of the future New Place.

Terry Evans has his hands on the reins of the demolition phase, as the interior walls come tumbling down.

What was once three rooms is now one large room -- the next step will be removing the pillars and installing cantilevered beams to support the roof -- as well as the dressing rooms on the West wall and the tech booth planned for the East Wall.

Computer rendering of the plan for the interior, looking from the house right corner. The colors are fanciful, but the murals on the walls will definitely be a part of the overall plan.

This "marquette," or demonstration panel created by Muralist DEAN CAMERON, shows how figures from theatre history will be mingled among the audience. Patrons will be able to sponsor a particular figure of their choice, and for an additional impressibly hefty contribution, you can have your own portrait painted next to the theatrical titan of your choice!

Transforming this venerable commerical space into a thriving and vital theatrical performance, workshop and research center will not be easy -- nor will it be inexpensive. But with hard work and the generosity and vision of company members and our friends in the Los Angeles community and the entertainment industry, we may not have to wait much longer for our gala opening night!
