February 5, with four performances a week through February 27,
2000.

Matthews, Philip Proctor, Bert Rosario, Marcelo Tubert and Alicia
Wollerton, along with other members and guests of the Antaeus
Company.

music will be composed and performed by Carl Smith.
"The Liar" is the story of a winning young nobleman,
returned home from University, who has only one real fault -
he's a terrible, terrible liar and can't seem to tell the truth
about the simplest thing. He falls in love with a beautiful girl
but his disregard for the truth entangles him in a hilarious
web of misunderstanding and mistaken identity, with a bit of
swordplay thrown in for good measure.
The new rhyming verse translation, by actor/playwright/scholar
Dakin Matthews, renders Alarcon's wonderfully witty 17th century
Spanish play into contemporary and very speakable English, while
maintaining the delightful verse forms of the original.
Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, born in Mexico City in 1581, emigrated
to Spain by the 1600s and became one of the most influential
writers of Spain's celebrated Golden Age of Theatre. His landmark
comedy, "The Liar, or The Truth Suspected" ("La
verdad sospechosa") was an enormous success, greatly influencing
French playwrights Corneille and Molière and the Italian
Carlo Goldoni, among others. Though considered the "First
Playwright of the Americas," Alarcón is rarely performed
in English on his home continent. The Antaeus Company's world
premiere production will demonstrate the charm, wit and lyricism
which made Alarcón one of the most successful and influential
playwrights of his century.
