ANTAEUS COMPANY OPENS NEW NOHO HOME WITH CHEKHOV X 4 The classics have a new home in Los Angeles: The Antaeus Company opens its first full production at its permanent space, New Place Theater Center, on February 12, 13, 14, and 15 with CHEKHOV x 4. The Antaeus Company, LAs Classical Theater Ensemble, is made of up of some of the finest classically trained actors in the country. Its actors are well known to television and film audiences, but in Antaeus productions, audiences can see them working on the kind of material they love best: great plays that have stood the test of time. CHEKHOV x 4 was first presented in May 2003 during the companys
highly successful Mayfest. The world premiere translations of
the four plays, The Proposal, The Anniversary,
The Bear, and Swan Song, are by company
members Nicholas Saunders and Frank Dwyer, whose popular translations
of Chekhovs full-length plays have been widely produced.
In these Award-winning directors Sabin Epstein, Michael Michetti, Stephanie
Shroyer and Andy Robinson helm the one-acts, with Vaughn Edwards
designing sets. The Proposal, directed by Sabin Epstein,
features Emily Bergl, Arye Gross and Marty Ferrero. The
Anniversary, directed by Michael Michetti, features John
Apicella, Anne Gee Byrd, J.D. Cullum, Philip Proctor, Tamara
Krinsky and Laura Russell. The Bear, directed by
Stephanie Shroyer, features Harry Groener, Said David Mermelstein in a 2000 New York Times article, Though the group has mounted only a handful of plays in the last 10 years, its efforts have earned it a loyal following... Critical comment has been favorable, and a notice in Time magazine generated the sort of buzz that most Los Angeles theaters only dream about.
