18th CENTURY THEATRE

The Drottningholm Theatre -- The ropes have been replaced several times and the candles have been superseded by electric lights, but otherwise this is the finest surviving example of an 18th century playhouse, with stage machinery by Italian designer Donato Stopani. In English and Swedish.

Marivaux at Saint-Sulpice Homepage -- Playful homage to the great 18th Century Farceur: Some good information, though more entertaining than scholarly.

Library of Congress -- American Memory
Vast archive of Americana, fortunately subdivided into more comprehensible chunks. Three which apply to American entertainment history are:

American Variety Stage - Vaudeville and Popular Entertainment 1870 -1920. Theatre playbills & programs, sound recording, playscripts, other material.

The New Deal Stage - selections from the Federal Theatre Project, 1935-1939.

Music for the Nation - American Sheet Music 1870-1885. Over 47,000 pieces of sheet music.

John Barrymore -- Perhaps the last great 19th century actor -- though he came of age early in the 20th. Site by Michael A. Morrison.

 

Minnie Maddern Fiske -- American actor and innovator, champion of ensemble technique. Was she the "American Stanislavsky"? Lynn Schrichte's site - (she does a one-woman show of Fiske).

Ford's Theatre -- National Historic Site. Fully restored and open for business.
